Privacy statement for Footage Back
Version of 19 October 2026.
Jonathan Emanuels, Letlandsestraat 20A, 3028 EE Rotterdam, the Netherlands (support@footageback.com) is responsible for the personal data described here.
In short
- Your footage stays on your Mac and your drives. Footage Back never sends footage, previews, file names or scan results to us or anyone else.
- The application has no account, no advertising, no analytics and no automatic crash reports.
- The application contacts us for three things only: to ask whether a newer version exists, to fetch the current prices when you choose something that has to be rebuilt, and when you buy. Each sends as little as it needs.
- Our website sets no cookies and loads nothing from other companies. We count page views, downloads and update checks per day, without your IP address.
The application on your Mac
Everything the application finds and makes is stored on your Mac: scan results, previews, your selection and the report of each time you bring files back. A system helper reads the drive you choose and remembers which drives you recover from, so that macOS only opens them read-only. You can remove all of it under Settings, Remove Footage Back.
Looking for updates
Once a day, and when you choose Check for Updates, the application asks our website whether a newer version exists. That request contains the version you have and, as every request on the internet does, your IP address. It contains nothing about you, your drives or your footage, and no update is downloaded or installed without your decision. We count these requests per day and per version, to know how many copies are in use; the count keeps neither your IP address nor anything else about you.
Showing prices
When you choose a recording that has to be rebuilt, the application fetches the current price list from our server. That request contains nothing but, as every request on the internet does, your IP address. We count how many price lists are fetched per day.
Our website
Our website footageback.com sets no cookies and loads nothing from other companies. When you open a page, your browser tells our counting server which page it is and which website you came from, if any. We keep only the number per day: not your IP address, not your browser, and nothing that recognises you on a next visit. When your browser asks sites not to track you (Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control), the page counts nothing. Downloads of the disk image are counted by our website's server in the same way.
When you buy
The application sends our server:
- a licence code it made for your purchase (we store only a fingerprint of it);
- a fingerprint that identifies the drive, calculated from its name, size and volume identifiers; it does not contain these details themselves;
- for each recording to be rebuilt: a fingerprint and its length;
- how much footage you buy (up to 1 minute, 10 minutes, 1 hour, or everything on the drive).
It does not send file names, footage, previews, your name or your e-mail address. Files that are copied back as they were are never sent to us in any form.
You pay on a page of Stripe. Stripe receives your payment details, e-mail address, your country or address for the VAT, and what else it needs to process the payment and prevent fraud, under its own privacy policy (stripe.com/privacy). We receive from Stripe that the payment succeeded, and we can see in our Stripe account your name, e-mail address, country and the last digits of your card, which we use for our records, for refunds and to help you when you write to us.
What we keep and for how long
| Data | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| The purchase: the fingerprints above, what was bought, amount, Stripe's payment reference | To deliver and honour your licence | As long as the purchase can be used, and at least the period below |
| Payment records in Stripe and our bookkeeping | Tax law | Seven years |
| Your e-mails to us | To answer you | Two years after the last message |
| Technical logs of the hosting of our server, which can contain IP addresses | Security and fault finding | At most 30 days |
| Counts per day of page views, downloads, update checks and price lists | To see how the website and the application are used | They contain no personal data; we keep them as long as they are useful |
Our own server software keeps your IP address only in working memory for a minute, to limit the number of requests from one address, and writes it to no log.
Legal grounds
We process the purchase data to perform our agreement with you, the bookkeeping because the law requires it, the logs because we have a legitimate interest in a secure service, and the requests we count because we have a legitimate interest in knowing how the website and the application are used.
Who receives data
- Stripe Payments Europe, Ltd. (Ireland), for payments.
- Hetzner Online GmbH (Germany), where our server and website run.
- Backblaze, Inc. (United States), which keeps our encrypted back-ups in its data centre in Amsterdam.
We do not sell data and do not use it for advertising.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your data, for correction or deletion, for restriction of the processing, or object to it. Write to support@footageback.com. Purchase data is tied to a licence code and an order number, not to a name: mention the order number from your payment receipt so that we can find it. You can complain to the Dutch Data Protection Authority (autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl) or the authority of your own country.
Changes
When this statement changes, the new version is published at this address with its date.
